Forget the Remarkables—this is the Mt Cook Village's answer to the great traverses. First established in 2013 (known locally as the Ranger Route), Guideless Buttress is a high-exposure, 1.5-day rock adventure sitting right at the confluence of the Hooker, Mueller, and Tasman valleys.
Location: Mount Wakefield offers arguably the best seat in the house, with front-row views of the Main Divide giants.
The Terrain: This isn't a pristine sport-crag—expect a mix of slabby buttresses, scrambling, and airy gendarmes. No bolts here. Fully natural.
The Vibe: It’s a "guideless" route by name only; you’ll have one of our professionals leading the way.
We kick off on the first afternoon, getting a few pitches in to find your rhythm before prepping for the big push tomorrow. The following day is a classic Southern Alps grind: you’ll encounter everything from "hero rock" to the more "character-building" loose stuff New Zealand is famous for. It’s a fun, challenging day for fit climbers who want a big day out without the glacier approach.
Duration: 1.5 Days
Challenge: Best suited for fit climbers comfortable with sustained scrambling and moving quickly over technical terrain.
Ratio: 1:1 for maximum efficiency on the ridge.

The 800+ vertical metre ascent on Mount Wakefield starts on the east side of the Hooker Valley, just past the 2nd swing bridge.
The Guideless Route involves a degree of exposed climbing and ridge travel. It is a committing assignment for both guide and the participant.
After a scrubby 100-metre scree slope climb, the buttress is reached. This section involves between 2 to 4 pitches, up to grade AU17. Also included are sectons of scrambling and moving together.
You'll negotiate various towers and gendarmes of varying quality. The rock eventually gives way to boulders and "rubbly" slopes on the upper basins of Mount Wakefield. It takes around 4 hours to reach the ridge top.
You “summit” just below our radio repeater, at almost 2,000 metres. The exit is a 2 to 3-hour descent along the Wakefield Ridge, or via the direct route down the scree fan adjacent to the Village. Must love scree.
